Kei Ito | The Beginning, in the land around me
The Griffin Foundation Gallery, Gregory Allicar Museum of Art (Fort Collins)
January 18 – April 2, 2023
Opening Reception and Artist Talk: January 19, 5 PM
Presented in partnership with the Center for Fine Art Photography
In collaboration with the Asian Pacific American Cultural Center at Colorado State University
The Beginning, in the land around me is a solo exhibition featuring the work of multimedia artist Kei Ito. The five individual projects presented span work Ito completed between 2020–2023 that converge on and center around his own nuclear heritage as a third generation hibakusha—atomic bomb victim—and expand Ito’s exploration of and research into the American nuclear experience. The exhibition surveys the experiences of “downwinders” (a person living downwind of a nuclear test site or reactor) and creates an environment to discuss the shared pasts and traumas both hibakusha and downwinders have suffered at the hands of nuclear weapons, all that goes into their creation, as well as issues surrounding health, environmentalism, and our current global system of war and peace.
A gallery talk and reception with Kei Ito will take place on Thursday, January 19 at 5 pm.
Admission is free; registration is required.

Artist Talk: Kenneth Wajda – Creating VIP Portraits for The Wise Photo Project
March 27, 2023
7 – 8 pm MST
Online via Zoom
In this online event, professional photographer Kenneth Wajda will discuss The Wise Photo Project, a photography project he started in 2015 with the goal of creating high-quality legacy studio portraits of seniors aged 70 and over at no cost, so that their future generations will always have strong portraits of their ancestors, these ‘very important people’ in their family’s history. Kenneth is currently seeking a Guggenheim grant to take the project to all 50 states and bring more photographers into the project. There are already two other photographers making work–one in Kentucky and one in Colorado. In this talk, Kenneth will show photographs that he’s made as well as how to get involved in your community to make these VIP portraits.

Artist Talk: Meet the Artists of Inside and Out
With Ron Cooper and Dr. Jaime Belkind-Gerson
Thursday, March 30, 2023
6 – 8 PM
Koelbel Library (Centennial)
Meet the artists of Inside and Out, an upcoming exhibition of photographs featuring Ron Cooper and Jaime Belkind-Gerson at the Curtis Center for the Arts April 8 – May 6, 2023.
They say the eyes are the window to the soul. They reveal true emotions, sentiments, and thoughts. The two artists in this exhibit convey the innermost and outermost beauty of humankind. Photographer Ron Cooper has traveled the world in pursuit of images that reflect local cultures and people. His photographs are intended to convey a sense of place, personality, and emotion. While his photographs document the many differences in appearance, dress, culture, and faith, he hopes they also convey the fact that our similarities and “connectedness” as humans far outweigh those superficial differences.
Doctor Jaime Belkind-Gerson creates his work with the images that surround him daily: X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs. In his artwork, he combines these images of our internal reality with images of the external world, manipulating them with specifically designed software algorithms.
Although these artists utilize vastly different approaches, both emphasize humankind’s reflections from within. Meet the artists and hear them talk about their process and inspiration.

They say the eyes are the window to the soul. They reveal true emotions, sentiments, and thoughts. The two artists in this exhibition convey the innermost and outermost beauty of humankind. These, he combines with other images that reflect our external world. They are manipulated with specifically designed software algorithms. Once captured, he uses manual processes for additional layering. Although these artists create their images very differently, both of them emphasize humankind’s reflections from within.
