The Colorado Photographic Arts Center presents Reflecting Voices – a collection of photographs from bodies of work by Alanna Airitam, Narkita Gold, and Rashod Taylor. In photography, light that reflects off a subject is most often what the camera records to produce a photograph. Here the subject is diverse expressions of black identity. Alanna’s tribute to Black culture as realized through characteristics of Dutch portraiture and the Harlem Renaissance; Narkita’s revealing portraits of Denver’s Black community seen through bright, colorful backgrounds; Rashod’s testimony of the Black American experience documented through an intimate study of family. It is an honor to spotlight these artists, who each reflect on identity, race, and legacy in their own way through the art of portraiture. With this exhibition we seek to provide the space to reflect, engage in conversation, and respond to our current moment. Curated by Samantha Johnston, CPAC Executive Director & Curator.
Join us for an Opening Reception at CPAC (tentative timed entry) on March 6 from 5 – 8:30 PM, and an online Artist Talk on March 10 from 6 – 7 PM.

To celebrate Month of Photography, the Denver Art Museum has organized a three-part virtual lecture series spotlighting Colorado photographers from the local creative community. Our first lecture features Albert Chong.
Through photography, installation and sculpture, Albert Chong addresses themes of identity, spirituality and ritual, his own family history in Jamaica, and the history of displaced peoples of Asian and African diaspora. In his photographic practice, he connects to these ideas through still lives and portraiture which he creates using a variety of techniques. Albert Chong is a Professor of Photography at the University of Colorado in Boulder and has been a recipient of both a National Endowment of the Arts Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship in photography.

Black and White Photography in the 21st Century
CURTIS CENTER FOR THE ARTS
CLOSING RECEPTION: Saturday, April 24 (6 – 8 pm)
Black & white photography is thought by some to be only a relic of the past. However, many assume that, with digital cameras and colorful ink printing available, B&W is an abandoned art form. To the contrary, some 21st century photographic artists still prefer to express their art through this medium. This exhibition explores the work of seven contemporary B&W photographers and provides insight into their philosophies of subject selection and their reasons for choosing a B&W presentation. Varied subjects are represented, from beautiful traditional landscapes to abstract explorations of the aged human body.
Photographers include: Jim Sidinger, Eric Biggerstaff, Tom Finke, Jeff Graves, Keith Pitman and Bruce Zander. This exhibit will also feature Anastasia Pottinger’s series, Centenarians, a photo essay of images of the human body at age 100. From each photographer, you will also learn of the techniques and methods used by them to create their images.

Leon Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Scott McCormick, who uses custom-built sets, headdresses, and expensive props to create photographs that tell the story of the Greek legend Orpheus.
From the Artist:
“I set out to borrow subject matter, geometry, and style from 19th century French academic painters such as Bouguereau, Cabanel, and Tissot. However, photos began to direct me and I found myself immersed in the folklore of Greek, Slavic, and Mayan cultures, and exploring a parallel between my art and that of the Greek legend, Orpheus. I spent countless days buried in books and on calls with professors, theologians and Mayan shamans. Through this research, I discovered a connection between these stories — which had wholly overtaken me — and my own past. This collection came to embody that exploration.
Rooted in custom-built sets, miniature models, headdresses, and extensive props, the photos began to naturally present themselves. Combining digital elements and film photos allowed me to discover the warmth and honesty for the epitaph of Orpheus. This gallery follows one story through a myriad of exploration in the art of photography.”

Photographer Anastasia Pottinger was once approached by a 101-year-old woman who wanted her body to be photographed in the nude. She was up for anything Anastasia would ask for with only one condition – the photos should keep her identity a secret. Pottinger was fascinated by the results, recognizing that the photos she had were special. This is how the “Centenarians” project was born. Since then the project has been featured on CNN, The Huffington Post and boredpanda.com among others. On this Zoom call, Stacie will talk about her Centenarian project, her process and what she is up to now.
Images from Anastasia’s project are included in the exhibition, Black and White in the 21st Century at Curtis Center for the Arts.
