Sarah Sense creates innovative photo-weavings that comment on stereotypical representations in popular culture, tell stories of colonialism, resistance, and resilience, re-indigenize landscapes, and explore identity and family history. Sense cuts materials such as her own landscape photography, images of Hollywood posters, family photos, maps, and manuscripts and reassembles the imagery anew using customary basket patterning and techniques from her Chitimacha and Choctaw heritage.
Sense has traveled through the Americas, Europe, and Southeast Asia inspiring her interest and research in Indigenous arts and histories internationally. She currently lives and works in California. Works by Sarah Sense are included in Speaking with Light: Contemporary Indigenous Photography, opening at the DAM on February 19, 2023.

Colorado photographer Trent Davis Bailey creates long-form projects that draw from personal history. His thoughtful and contemplative photographs explore themes such as memory, place, family, and loss. In one of his series, The North Fork (2011-2018), he was inspired by childhood memories, small-scale family farms, the landscape of western Colorado, and reconnecting with extended family.
Bailey holds a BA and BFA from University of Colorado, Boulder and an MFA from California College of the Arts. He teaches photography and his photographs have been widely published and exhibited. A monograph of his series The North Fork will be published by Trespasser in 2023.

Month of Photography Lecture: Renluka Maharaj
March 21, 2023
6 – 7 pm
Denver Art Museum
Sharp Auditorium—Hamilton Building, Lower Level
Through photography, painting, installation, and archival research, Colorado-based artist Renluka Maharaj explores how history and memory inform identity. Her work brings attention to forgotten histories and the endurance of the human spirit, often focusing on empowering the stories of women. She is particularly influenced by Indian indentureship in Trinidad and Tobago, which is a part of her own family’s history. As she explains, “Starting in the mid 1800’s, indentured laborers from India were sent throughout the globe as a substitute for slave labor. My grandparents entered Trinidad and Tobago as indentured laborers to continue working on sugar plantations, and this has been a point of departure for ongoing dialogue and research.”
Renluka Maharaj grew up in Trinidad and Tobago before moving to New York and then Colorado. She holds a BFA from University of Colorado and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been widely published and exhibited and she has participated in several artist residencies.

Artist Talk: Meet the Artists of Inside and Out
With Ron Cooper and Dr. Jaime Belkind-Gerson
Thursday, March 30, 2023
6 – 8 PM
Koelbel Library (Centennial)
Meet the artists of Inside and Out, an upcoming exhibition of photographs featuring Ron Cooper and Jaime Belkind-Gerson at the Curtis Center for the Arts April 8 – May 6, 2023.
They say the eyes are the window to the soul. They reveal true emotions, sentiments, and thoughts. The two artists in this exhibit convey the innermost and outermost beauty of humankind. Photographer Ron Cooper has traveled the world in pursuit of images that reflect local cultures and people. His photographs are intended to convey a sense of place, personality, and emotion. While his photographs document the many differences in appearance, dress, culture, and faith, he hopes they also convey the fact that our similarities and “connectedness” as humans far outweigh those superficial differences.
Doctor Jaime Belkind-Gerson creates his work with the images that surround him daily: X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs. In his artwork, he combines these images of our internal reality with images of the external world, manipulating them with specifically designed software algorithms.
Although these artists utilize vastly different approaches, both emphasize humankind’s reflections from within. Meet the artists and hear them talk about their process and inspiration.
