Exhibiting more than 80 self-portraits, CVA presents the artwork of celebrated visual activist Zanele Muholi (South African, b. 1972) who uses their body as a canvas to confront the deeply personal politics of race and representation in the visual archive. Their ongoing series Somnyama Ngonyama, which translates to ‘Hail The Dark Lioness’ from isiZulu, one of the official languages of South Africa, playfully employs the conventions of classical painting, fashion photography, and the familiar tropes of ethnographic imagery to rearticulate contemporary identity politics. Each black and white self-portrait asks critical questions about social (in)justice, human rights, and contested representations of the Black body. This exhibition was organized by Autograph ABP and curated by Renée Mussai.

Shadows Gather is a photography project that documents the alternative nightlife scene and the colorful individuals that thrive in it. Based out of Denver, Colorado, Shadow is a photographer who uses non-conventional techniques, such as pairing a Fuji Instax Neo Classic Mini with lighting from an iPhone flashlight, to create striking instant photographs that preserve and celebrate underground culture. In her photos, you’ll find energetic portraits from a mixture of scenes, gutter punks, drag artists, and creatures of the night.
Shadow has directly experienced the growth and cultural changes that have occurred in Denver and has focused her work on ensuring that the visual narrative of her subjects remains as the city continues to evolve. She celebrates the beauty of those on the cultural fringes and provides a sense of community and a safe haven to folks that have been deemed misfits by mainstream culture.
Following the project launch in March of 2019, Shadow has since become a staple in music venues, nightclubs, and bars across Denver, as well as traveling to locales like Austin, Texas, and Los Angeles to further her work.
All art for exhibition is scanned from its original Fuji Instax film format at the highest dpi and printed on archival paper at 30x40in and 20x30in sizes.

The Colorado Photographic Arts Center presents Reflecting Voices – a collection of photographs from bodies of work by Alanna Airitam, Narkita Gold, and Rashod Taylor. In photography, light that reflects off a subject is most often what the camera records to produce a photograph. Here the subject is diverse expressions of black identity. Alanna’s tribute to Black culture as realized through characteristics of Dutch portraiture and the Harlem Renaissance; Narkita’s revealing portraits of Denver’s Black community seen through bright, colorful backgrounds; Rashod’s testimony of the Black American experience documented through an intimate study of family. It is an honor to spotlight these artists, who each reflect on identity, race, and legacy in their own way through the art of portraiture. With this exhibition we seek to provide the space to reflect, engage in conversation, and respond to our current moment. Curated by Samantha Johnston, CPAC Executive Director & Curator.

During the pandemic, face masks have become a ubiquitous part of our environment, impacting our thoughts, interactions, and relationships with others. In January, DAVA Youth worked remotely to create a series of photographs featuring face masks in different settings. In Masquerading, their art explores how wearing a mask changes our faces, which can feel invasive or protective, and even allow us to create new personalities.
Photographer Preston Utley adds to this exhibition with a series of black and white photographs documenting mask wearing and other desolate scenes from the pandemic.

Don’t miss a second display of photography in DAVA’s windows as you walk by, featuring the project Quaranteens. This exhibit features photographs by middle and high school students who worked remotely over 10 weeks, addressing current events through their own lens. Their photo-journal diaries involve playful and poignant portrayals of their time during quarantine.

Matthew Pevear (b. 1993, Winthrop, MA) is an artist currently based in Denver. Traditionally working in photography, Pevear’s work looks to explore the banal and ubiquitous. Focusing on simple scenes found in the everyday, his work extracts the subtle, yet complicated, imagery that exists in daily life. Pevear recently completed solo exhibitions with the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art in Boulder, Colorado, and DATELINE Gallery in Denver, Colorado and has self-published two volumes of art photography books.

In conjunction with the Month of Photography Denver festival in March 2021, curators Genevieve Waller and Mary Grace Bernard present an exhibition of photography, collage and film works by Román Anaya, Paula Gillen, Stacy J. Platt, Gabby Recny, Emily Van Loan and Lauren Winges.
Referring to the well-known phrase of the evil stepmother in the Brothers Grimm version of Snow White, the exhibition title conjures ideas of representation, magic, power and narrative. The full phrase “Mirror mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest one of all?” is steeped in racial and gender politics, where the word “fair” is synonymous not only with beauty but implies the superiority of light skin and physical beauty as a woman’s highest achievement. With the works in this exhibition the curators counter and open up a dialogue about these embedded values.

Colorado in the Present Tense: Narkita Gold, Rick Griffith, Nathan Hall, and Maia Ruth Lee centers on how artists of the Colorado region are absorbing, responding to, grappling with, and reimagining the upended world in which we presently find ourselves.
Narkita Gold’s project, Black in Denver features 100 portraits of those who identify as Black, living in the Denver community. A multi-year project, MCA Denver will exhibit the most comprehensive presentation of Gold’s photographic and text-based series. Celebrating the immense richness of Denver’s Black community, Black in Denver is a joyful, vibrant, and layered testament to what makes this city so singular and how Denver can best elevate and honor those singular voices.

Please visit the Reflecting Voices exhibition page on CPAC’s website for details.

This show of nude photography has a mix of perspectives and proximities to the subject, from abstract to tangible images that show the body in new ways. It also has a range of spaces as settings, from the studio to locations, each facilitate different ways of seeing and responding to the figure. Sonia Soberats’ relationship with photography didn’t begin until she lost her eyesight to glaucoma in the early 1990’s. Soberats uses the technique of Light Painting — a photographic process utilizing lengthy exposures in total darkness and hand-held light sources — with which Sonia is able to feel, shape, and embellish her subjects. Sonia is a co-founder and member of the New York based collective for blind photographers, Seeing With Photography. Sonia’s work poses fundamental questions about the notion of visual culture and about the relationship between perception, imagination, and creation. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world.

Christopher Makos was born in Lowell, Massachusetts and grew up in California before moving to Paris to study architecture, and later to work as an apprentice to Man Ray. Since the early 1970s, he has developed a boldly graphic photojournalism, documenting the male ego as a signature style in all his work. During the 1980s, Makos was a seminal figure in the New York art scene, where he was responsible for introducing the work of both Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring to Andy Warhol. His photographs have been the subject of numerous exhibitions both in galleries and museums, with works shown at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and New York’s Whitney Museum.
Paul Solberg studied Anthropology at the University of Cape Town before moving to NYC in 1996. Solberg began his photographic career with his first published book, Bloom (2005), following Puppies Behind Bars (2006), Tyrants + Lederhosen (2011), Tattoos, Hornets & Fire (2012) (co-authored with Christopher Makos), and his monograph, Ten Years In Pictures (2014). First known for his acclaimed still life portraits, the same stillness is seen in his human subjects. Solberg’s photographs have been published widely and shown internationally at museums and galleries.

For almost two centuries, photographers have understood the power of a photograph to confuse, entertain, lie, alter or to depict reality. And we know that the photographer has always made choices: when to click the shutter, how to frame the picture, what to include and exclude, what part of the image to accentuate. We have learned to question whether the image is in fact an accurate depiction of a specific moment in time or rather, an expression of the photographer’s emotional state at the time of its creation.
In this exhibition, Juror Fran Forman challenged artists to explore the conceit of documenting reality versus creating fake news through manipulated imagery “by any means,” in search of the kernel of truth that lies within.

This exhibition highlights 9 – 11 never-before-seen photographs from Ron Pollard’s Kane Ranch collection, framed by Christopher R. Perez and accompanied by a poem by Peter LaFarge.
From the artist:
The Andy Kane Ranch, located in Fountain, Colorado, was the singer/songwriter Peter LaFarge’s boyhood home. Peter has become a controversial figure in recent years. As a young artist, his claim that he was of Native American birth was a fabrication.
Though, as I walked through his abandoned childhood home, I understood how connected he must have felt to this land. The murals that adorn his childhood bedroom speak of a spirit and passion and a memory that has been erased.
A few years ago, the home was razed. Nothing remains but memories, pictures, and songs, and poetry.
He may not have had native roots, but his soul was of this land. He was a genuine Rodeo Cowboy and an incredible artist.
– “Yea, call him drunken Ira Hayes,
But his land is just as dry,
And the ghost is lying thirsty
In the ditch where Ira died.”

One of four exhibitions on view at 40 West Gallery during the Month of Photography festival, Relinquish: A Photographic Conversation Between Mother and Daughter features works by Boulder-based artist Casie Zalud.
From the Artist:
The Relinquish project is a series of diptychs including one photograph taken by my six-year-old daughter Linnéa, and one photograph taken by myself. Linnéa’s photos are interactions with the world around her, created from a place of emotion, curiosity, and pride. By consciously following her example, I have worked to rediscover my own interpretations of these elements in my work.

Interpretation and discovery in the minutia, the microscopic and photogram abstraction.
In a pairing of unique visions and photo process artists, BRDG Project brings together budding new stars and veteran image-makers alike for Month of Photography. In the microscopic imagery of Devvon Simpson, and the playful enigmatic photograms of Ethan Jantzer, and the ever-present compelling visions of Justin Beard, they are challenging familiar definitions of the photographic method and looking at the elements of the everyday in new and visceral interpretations. Transforming literal subject matter into the abstract and sublime.
